March 2022: Intermediate Intensive VAWA

Type: March 2022: Virtual CLE Session Recordings
Price: $517.50

For those of you who missed our online conference, "Intermediate Intensive VAWA Training," the recordings are now available for purchase. The online conference is composed of four separate sessions. You can buy all four sessions togheter or individual sessions.

During this two-day training, participants will learn best practices for navigating complex VAWA cases. Through interactive discussions, we will explore how to address challenging issues, such as evidentiary problems, inadmissibility waivers, and removal proceedings. We will devote one session to discussing case questions from participants. This intermediate-level course is intended for attorneys and legal staff who already have a basic level of understanding about VAWA-related cases. See below the general agenda of the online training:

Session 1: An I-360° View of Common Obstacles in VAWA Self-Petitions

VAWA self-petitions have existed for almost 30 years, but new challenges continue to arise, and old ones sometimes come back. In this session, participants will examine difficult situations in VAWA cases, such as those involving prior I-130 denials, a lack of evidence, and good moral character issues.

Speakers: Amy Cheung, Senior Legal Counsel & Lia Ocasio, Staff Attorney, ASISTA.

Session 2: From VAWA to AOS: Inadmissibility Waivers & Exceptions:

Winning a VAWA self-petition is a tremendous victory that can change the lives of survivors and their derivatives, but without the ability to adjust status, that victory is limited. In this session, participants will learn how to address inadmissibility waivers and exceptions specific to VAWA self-petitioners.

Speakers: Amy Cheung, Senior Legal Counsel & Lia Ocasio, Staff Attorney, ASISTA.

Session 3: VAWA in the Court: Self-Petitioners in Removal Proceedings

VAWA self-petitioners may be placed in proceedings prior to filing the I-360, while the I-360 is pending, or after an I-485 is denied. While I-360s can be approved regardless of the status of the removal proceedings, these self-petitioners may have complex representation needs and can be eligible for multiple forms of relief, including VAWA cancellation. In this interactive session, participants will examine common issues affecting self-petitioners in proceedings and strategies for addressing them.

Speakers: Amy Cheung, Senior Legal Counsel, ASISTA & Angel Graf, Directing Attorney, Las Vegas Office of the ICWC.

Session 4: Stop, Collaborate, & Listen: VAWA Case Edition

In this session, presenters will discuss pre-submitted case questions and scenarios about VAWA self-petitions. Participants will have the opportunity to share feedback and suggestions with each other about the case questions.

Speakers: Amy Cheung, Senior Legal Counsel & Lia Ocasio, Staff Attorney, ASISTA.
